This project was approved as part of the 1995 1996 program and rephased with footnote-a status, funded by an extrabudgetary contribution from Rep. of Korea for four years. The aim of the project is to identify successful regional strategies in order to assist participating countries in the region in the expansion of their nuclear power program and to create awareness among the national organisations of the special requirements of nuclear power program. |

Achievements |

The project assisted Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the biggest electricity utility company in Malaysia to review the nuclear option and to facilitate the preparation of reports and studies aimed at clarifying the possible role of nuclear power and the impact and requirements of a nuclear power programme |

Background |
| This project was approved as part of the 1995 - 96 program and rephased with footnote-a status. The aim of the project is to promote wider acceptance by the public and free circulation of irradiated food within and among countries in the region. |

Achievements |
| MINT has undertaken the role to co-ordinate activities in food irradiation among the government institutions, universities and the local industries in the country. The project contributed towards establishment of national R&D program on food irradiation with objective of demonstrating efficacy of technology on local agricultural commodities, harmonisation of regulations based on Codex General Standards on Irradiated Food as a step towards facilitating trade in food irradiation and information dissemination to the consumers, food industry and policy makers in promoting acceptance of technology. |

Achievements |
| The project assisted TNB in the preparation of an Energy and Electricity Demand Study. The study on Integrated Energy Analysis for Malaysia was conducted using ENPEP ( Energy and Power Evaluation Package). TNB also acquired both IAEA modelling software such as WASP III/IV and MAED. |

Achievements |
| At the 19th. Working Group Meeting of Representatives of RCA Member States held in March 1996 at Yangoon, Myanmar, Malaysia was appointed as the RCA TCDC Contact Point assisted by Indonesia, Philippines and Australia. At the 20th. Regular Meeting of Representatives of RCA Member States held in March 1998 at Welington, New Zealand, agreed that Malaysia would continue to act as the RCA TCDC Focal Point (Lead Country). |

The aims of the project is to assist Member States to develop reference disposal concepts for low and intermediate level waste (LILW) from non-power sources; to develop a regional forum to facilitate sharing of experience and technical co-operation among RCA Member States in order to address long term safety issues in the region with respect to management of LILW. |

Achievements |
| The project contributed towards in the establishment of the National Tissue Bank at Hospital University Science Malaysia and a laboratory responsible for R&D of Tissue Banking at MINT. Sterilised amnions, bones and soft tissue are currently processed for the local hospitals according to the quality system, which has been set up. |

Achievements |
| A team of experts in the field of NDT is established at MINT and SIRIM. The team has performed several high quality services for the industries and government agencies. Routine training courses are held for NDT personnel. A national scheme for certification of NDT personnel is developed and implemented. |

Background |
The project was approved in 1997 and rephased. The aim of the project is to promote the routine application of tracer technology and nucleonic control systems in selected industrial sub-sectors such as petrochemical and mineral ore processing. |

Achievements |
| A pool of specialists in the tracer technology for R&D, as well as for the applications of tracer and sealed source in industry is established at MINT. Two techniques known ad TAFLOSS for analysing the integrity of storage tank floor and COLSCAN for external scanning of distillation columns were successfully developed. Both techniques were employed to overcome some problems encountered at the oil refinery in the country. |

Background |
| The project was approved in 1997 and rephased. The aim of the project is to strengthen and further enhance the radiation protection infrastructure in support of industrial activities and health services in the region. The project includes the CRP on Compilation of Anatomical, Physiological, and Metabolic Characteristics for a Reference Asian Man and Development of Distance Learning Materials for Radiation Protection. |

Achievements |
| The project has contributed to the further strengthening of radiation safety and to the establishment of national radiation protection services in the country. MINT, Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) and National University of Malaysia are involved in national training programme on radiological safety and enforcement and implementation of radiation protection regulations in the country. Thus, with availability of these trained personnel and certified laboratories, Malaysia would in future be less dependent on outside assistance and should be in better position to nominate these personnel as an expert to other countries in the region. |

| The project was approved in 1997 for the duration 3 years. The aims of the project are: |
To promote routine use of radiation and isotopic techniques to meet regional needs in environmental management and industrial performance and competitiveness, with particular emphasis on cleaner and more energy efficient production processes and on reducing marine and air pollution; To produce, test and disseminate distance learning material suitable for end users on radiation safety practices and to identify and train a core of specialists from emergency response agencies throughout the region in radiological emergency procedures and mitigation; To develop a sustainable institutional network comprising the national nuclear research institutes in the region and the end users of the technology in the environmental and industrial sectors, including the use of modern information technology and the support of the Regional Resource Units. |
