Food Irradiation book launched at TOCFI
 

 

A book on food irradiation, entitled "The Potential of Food Irradiation in Malaysia" was launched by the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs during the opening of a seminar on Trade Opportunities and Challenges in Food Irradiation (TOCFI) at the Park Plaza International Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, on Monday, 7 August 2000.

 

The 170-page plus book, authored by Zainon Othman and Dr. Muhamad Lebai Juri, is published by the Malaysian Institute for Nuclear Technology Research (MINT).  It introduces the technology of food irradiation; gives an overview of food irradiation in Malaysia covering its development, R&D, and economic feasibility; touches on the detection of irradiated food; and gives a future outlook of the technology.  A chapter is also devoted to public acceptance in which the result of a public survey on food irradiation is presented.

 

The book also includes as appendices the Codex General Standard for Irradiated Food as well as the current status (up to May 2000) of clearance of food item in several countries.
